Vamos a la Playa

You may have been thinking 'Vamos… vamos... where do I know that from?' Cast your minds back to Euro-discos in the 1980s, possibly a holiday in Spain and chances are you were boogieing to the strains of Righeira's Italo-dance mega-hit 'Vamos a la playa'. All together now, ‘Vamos a la playa oh, oh, oh, oh, oh’…

Whilst the title is suggestive of beaches, sun, parties and general holiday fun, you may be surprised to know that the song was originally recorded by two Belgians (now a chemist and ophthalmologist) and the lyrics are actually anti-nuclear with verses like:

Vamos a la playa
La bomba estallo
Las radiaciones tuestan
Y matizan de azul

Let’s go to the beach
The bomb went off
The radiation toasts (tans)
And turns a shade of blue

In the 1990s this track was remade as a merengue party anthem 'Vamos al Caribe' by Cana Latina which really is about beaches, wiggling it with 'sabrosura' (literally tastiness!) and having a great time. ¡VAMOS! ¡Que siga la fiesta! Party on!
