Cantina Latina - na Brasil
Radio Favela – Uma Onda No Ar
2003, Dir Helvécio Ratton, 92 mins

The Star & Shadow Cinema's popular ¡Cantina Latina! film and conversation night diversifies to Portuguese as it visits Brazil, with this story of Radio Favela. An uplifting story of friends who set up a community radios station in the favela where they live, it is in the same vein as Brazilian cinema classics City Of God and Favela Rising.

Based on a true experiences Radio Favela follows the lives of a group of friends who dream of running a pirate radio station, by and for, the residents of the favela in which they live. The four young boys set up a community radio station that shouts at the world the voice of the voiceless, and express their reality and music.

In a short time, the radio station gained a huge following but goes far beyond the reach of its air waves, and into conflict with the authorities.

¡Cantina Latina! is a monthly night of film and conversation, usually in Spanish, this month we head to Brasil and hope to encourage students and natives speakers of Portuguese to converse in the cinema bar after the film. Brazilian baile funk music will be played after the film and Brazilian cocktail Caipirinhas will be available during the social afterwards.

Films are screened with English sub-titles and all are welcome. Portuguese conversation is optional and the evening open to non-Portuguese speakers too. The Star & Shadow Cinema gives free entry for refugee and asylum seekers and those who could not otherwise afford to visit the cinema.

Cost £4 film, £3 concessions, £2 conversation only (after 9pm)
Free to Asylum seekers and refugees.
