Peña Flamenca plus free daytime dance classes for all ages!

Flamenco was recently designated as a unique and valued treasure by UNESCO, and what better way to celebrate than a special Peña Flamenca event at Dance City!

Dance City will be recreated as a magical Flamenco space for one day only, with an amazing line-up of professional Flamenco artists including Mayte Beltrán (dancer), Paco Bethencourt-Llobet (guitarist) and Danielo Olivera (singer) plus Isabel Muñoz, Andrew Robinson, Jeremy Bradfield.
The performance starts at 7pm. This will be followed by a DJ set at 10pm.

There will also be two free daytime dance classes - one for children (7-15) and one for adults (16+). Limited spaces are available.

Mayte Beltrán - Dancer

Mayte Beltrán is an extraordinary Flamenco dancer from Almería (Spain). She completed her dance degree in Seville, Granada and Córdoba where some of the greatest Spanish maestros have trained including Mario Maya o Rafaela Carrasco. Mayte has shared the stage with Flamenco legend Tomatito and Miguel Poveda and has also performed in Italy, Morocco and China. A fine example of her talent can be seen in the latest film by Carlos Saura 'Flamenco Flamenco'

Isabel Muñoz - Dancer
Isabel Muñoz was born in Granada (Spain) and began to dance Flamenco with local teacher Mariquilla. After finishing her degree in Granada she also studied in Andalusia at the Carmen de las Cuevas and with Carmen Cortés (Sanlucar). As a performer, Isabel has worked with Jaleo Peña Flamenca and performed in festivals throughout the UK. Isabel has also recently started to collaborate with the Newcastle Flamenco Collective as well as being a permanent member of Alba Flamenca in Edinburgh.

Paco Bethencourt-Llobet
Paco is the brainchild behind this first ¡VAMOS! Peña Flamenca event and has been deeply involved in the UK Flamenco scene, the North East and ¡VAMOS! Itself from 2006. Paco Bethencourt-Llobet is a musicologist and music teacher currently completing a PhD at Newcastle University. He also has a MA in Ethnomusicology. In Granada Paco studied Flamenco guitar with Paco Cortés amongst many others and attended master classes with Pepe Habichuela, Cañizares and Gerardo Núñez in Sanlucar. Paco has performed in a variety of projects in Germany, Spain and UK with many different acts Electro-Flamenko, Flamencos del Norte, Quartet Island and Newcastle Flamenco Collective. In the UK Paco has performed in Durham, Edinburgh, Gateshead, Leeds and in London at Cargo and Ronnie Scott’s.

Danielo Olivera - Guitarist
Danielo Olivera is from Cadiz, Spain. Having a musical family Danielo as a guitarist absorbed many different styles - including folk music and the passion of the Carnival. In 2002 Danielo arrived in UK and started to play with a flamenco guitarist from Jerez as well as UK artists.Danielo has performed in Greece, France and Spain as well as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Mela Festival.

Andrew Robinson - Guitarist
Andrew has a 1st Class Honours Degree in Guitar performance from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and a MA in Music and has been a  finalist in many national and international guitar competitions. Andrew has also performed with many orchestras as a concerto soloist. In constant demand as both a Classical and Flamenco guitarist, Andrew has made an immediate impact with his compositions gaining international recognition from the likes of Emilio Maya and Gerardo Nunez.

Jeremy Bradfield
Jeremy Bradfield studied composition at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne and is a multi-instrumentalist, performing in a diverse number of musical capacities. Interested mainly in percussive hybrids and improvisation, Jeremy finds Flamenco an exciting musical form that offers opportunities for rhythmic and structural experimentation. He has also played electric bass guitar in a previous electronic incarnation of the current Flamenco collective, Electro-Flamenko.

As part of ¡VAMOS! 2011, Pablo Bethencourt-Llobet will also be involved in two music events at Barkollo:

  • on Friday 17th June, playing Bossa Nova with Sarah Ffrench Davis,
  • on Saturday 9th July, performing Cuban and Spanish tunes with Mariley Reinoso Olivera and Alx de Alfaro.
  • He'll also be featured at a Todo el Mundo night at Butterfly Cabinet on Wednesday 29th June!
