Mano a Mano: A Night Inspired by Tango
This new piece of physical and musical performance, inspired by Tango, features a debut UK performance by Argentinian singer Gloria Marco.
"A young couple sneak into the warehouse, and play out their romantic 'games' and fantasies there...but a game of Hide and Seek reveals an unexpected 'intruder' into their intimate rendez-vous...a stranger who has sought refuge in the warehouse, and who is haunted by nostalgia for his homeland and his family. He is a talented musician, and his music sings of another place and time. This encounter and their different reactions to, it starts to reveal some cracks in the young couple's bond, which must be confronted. The young traveller is visited by his 'angel', who guides them all to follow their hearts..."
Dynamix Skate Park, built in a former plastics factory, provides an atmospheric industrial backdrop for a young couple's playful rendez-vous. But their passion for each other is called into question when they encounter an 'other' who is hiding away in the warehouse, seeking refuge. Ramps and obstacles create a playground for the spectators and players of Mano a Mano. Drawing on movement from Parkour and Acro-Balance, as well as Tango, the piece is named after a Spanish phrase, originally relating to Bullfighting, describing a 'head to head', or a collaborative effort to achieve something difficult and amazing. A playful, passionate, lovers' dance, with live music playing its own provocative part in the relationship, which culminates in the North East's only indoor Amphitheatre. Lee Tinnion and Hollie Johnson, Parkour and acro-balance practitioners, Alx Alfaro, percussionist and musician of Musica Mundo and Burundanga will perform in this piece, created collaboratively, with direction and dramaturgy by Rosa Stourac McCreery.
Gloria Marco originally from Argentina, is the daughter of Tango Composer Hector Marco. From these roots, she spread her own musical net much wider, and became knowledgeable about all kinds of music from Latin America, incorporating these influences in her own unique songs and compositions. Gloria is now based in Paris, and collaborates with musicians there and back in her home town of Buenos Aires.
For those inspired to move themselves, DJ OSCAR will finish the night off playing Latino tunes to get your hips shaking.
Scrumptious food complete the experience, providing the perfect excuse to discover this unique new venue!
