In 1936 the Spanish fought to defend their democratically elected government, but were beaten by Franco (with backing from Hitler and Mussolini). At Morden Tower, an evening of readings from ‘To Make The People Smile Again’ (previously broadcast on the BBC World Service), George Wheeler’s memoir of his experience of the Spanish Civil War. Author Lewis Mates will talk about the role the North East played.
