The Battle of Chile at SIDE

Exciting news from our friends at Side Cinema! Over four Tuesdays from 22nd November, they have ambitiously programmed a screening of ALL THREE parts of Patricio Guzman's The Battle of Chile, followed by the film he made on returning to Chile in the late 1990s after exile. Not to be missed.

More info below.

THE BATTLE OF CHILE, Side Cinema, 22nd November - 13th December
‘Patricio Guzman’s heartbreaking probe of Chile’s revolution, the Pinochet coup, and the long entangled aftermath will be considered in centuries to come one of the most eloquent and daring explorations of revolution and repression, hope and memory, to survive our sorry times.’ (Ariel Dorfman)

Tuesday 22nd November
Part 1: The Insurrection of the Bourgeoisie (1978, 96 mins), 7.30pm
No other film captures as powerfully the ferment, conflict and sheer movement of the streets in insurrection. Part 1 ends with the extraordinary footage of soldiers taking aim and a cameraman actually filming the shot that kills him.

Tuesday 29th Nov
Part 2: The Coup d’Etat (1978, 88 mins), 7.30pm
Allende’s fortunes go from bad to worse as he resists a violent response. An impassioned presidential vow never to leave the palace is followed by the waves of jets bombing the Moneda Palace.

Tuesday 6th December
Part 3: The Power of the People (1978, 79 mins), 7.30pm
Cinematographer Jorge Müller Silva ‘disappeared’. In exile, Guzman and collaborators constructed the narratives, asking the question: ‘Can a society dedicated to constitutional law make the transition to Socialism peaceably?’

Tuesday 13th December
Chile, Obstinate Memory (1997, 57 mins), 7.30pm
The Battle of Chile was, unsurprisingly, banned by the Pinochet regime. In 1997 Guzman returned, juxtaposing the past with both the painful memories of contemporaries and the painful sense of a youth denied its history.

Tickets £5 (£4 concs).
